1. How do you handle negative self-talk, and what strategies do you use to turn it around?
I make a conscious effort to brush off any whispers of inadequacy that don’t align with my future self as soon as they try to sneak into the narrative of my story. This happens at the top of every day and several times throughout the day.
I've learned that by making sure my positive voice remains the loudest in my ears allows me to feel more connected to the infinite possibilities and favorable outcomes that life has to offer. If I’m in a negative space, I will attract negativity. And the same is true on the other side.
2. What's one piece of advice you would give to men who are struggling with their mental health?
I see you. And if there's a voice inside that keeps saying "I don't want to be in this space", your higher self is calling you to release a superpower that would change the entire course of your life.
You have the full capability to walk in your truest excellence without validation or permission from anyone else.
Healing has no set amount of time. It’s a daily need for peace and the discipline to create that in your friendships and interactions.
Life will start to open up to what you need and fulfill the thing that keeps you anxious. The cycle will always continue if you do the same things.
3.Self-care is crucial for mental health. What are some self-care practices you swear by?
One of my favorite things to do is color. During the pandemic, my wife and I welcomed our first son, Jru Covington Luckie. With everything going on, I needed an outlet that required me to be still.
I found it calming and reflective. It allowed me to experience a simpler joy. One that’s not connected to being successful or requires me to give of myself to someone else. My time, my pace, my color choice, my point of view.
Also,
- Long walks
- Long showers
- Turning my phone on silent or OFF
- Sleeping as much as possible
- Eating food and drinking beverages that make my body feel good
- Work out and stay consistent
- Compliment myself and others
- Encouraging myself and others
- Give hugs that last longer than 5 seconds
- Wearing lotions and oils that make me feel like royalty
- 5 part skin care regimen including jade roller and Gua Sha
- Sleeping with chakra balancing music playing
4. Stress can take a significant toll on mental health. What are your go-to strategies for managing stress effectively?
My spiritual ejector seat is always ready for action. Mentally, I step out of my own perspective and absorb the moment as a whole.
Recently I've noticed myself not reacting to what’s currently happening but staying quiet enough to take it all in.
5. 87 is a number that symbolizes passion. What’s your 87, and how do you channel that into wellness?
God is my 87. Finding His favor in small and big spaces is a constant reminder of why I need a clear connection to myself and things that come into my orbit.
My Mrs, J'Nelle is definitely one of those things. The lessons we learn together and from each other are invaluable. It's not by coincidence that we were brought together so she's my daily reminder of just how magical the world can be.
Having someone who challenges you, accepts you, loves you and continues to fight for you is something I remain grateful for. It gives me an immeasurable sense of peace in the world.
And of course dance. The power it has had in transforming my life as a choreographer and the lives of people who take our class renews my excitement. The reciprocation of healing that happens is what causes us to continue moving through each day with as much intention and passion as possible.
